About Us
Lewisham Choral Society is one of the leading choirs in South London, committed to providing the best choral experience for our members and our audience.
We provide an environment for amateur choral singers with a diverse range of experience and backgrounds that is dynamic, challenging and forward-looking.
We are open to all, and work hard to provide a friendly, welcoming and accessible atmosphere for everybody.
LCS rehearse and perform a very wide range of choral music each year. We promote three or four concerts each season in venues across South London, and we are also involved in a range of other activities in partnership with other amateur and professional arts organisations.
LCS today draws on a rich history of choral singing in Lewisham. We began life as the St. Mary’s Singers over 50 years ago. From this point we have grown steadily to our current membership of over 100 active singers.
This strength and experience has allowed us to present a repertoire in recent years ranging from Mahler's Symphony No. 8 to Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610, and from Tchaikovsky’s Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom
to Jonathan Dove's The Passing of the Year. We have also performed a wide range of new music, including London premiere performances of works by Naji Hakim, Jonathan Rathbone and Robert Percy.
Although we are a large choir, we are always keen to welcome new members. Our rehearsals are fun, friendly, open to all and provide an excellent way to get to know us. If you would like to find out more about joining us, please click here.
Over the 2007/08 season, we will be rehearsing and performing a
wide range of music. We begin the September term by focussing on
Verdi's Requiem for our 10th November concert at the Blackheath
Halls. We shall also begin learning a new work, composed for LCS
by Robert Percy as part of our successful application to the
Adopt-a-Composer scheme run by the Society for the Promotion of New
Music and Making Music. Robert's composition will form the
centrepiece of our winter concert on Saturday 15th December,
together with seasonal music and carols for choir and audience.
After Christmas we begin rehearsing for our March concert of
American Music, which will also include the Five Spirituals from
Tippett's Child of Our Time. The season will close with a
performance of David Fanshawe's African Sanctus on Saturday 5th
July at the Blackheath Halls
These challenges build on a history of strong partnerships between LCS and other arts organisations including: The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, English National Opera, and the Society for the Promotion of New Music.
LCS is proud to be supported by the London Borough of Lewisham and to be a member of Making Music.
